On November 12, 2014, Neahkahnie High School Journalism Club and yearbook staff students attended Fall Press Day at the University of Oregon in Eugene thanks to the Mudd Nick Foundation. The day-long session in which over 700 students from around the state attended, featured a variety of journalism-related workshops led by professionals in the field. Based on their specific interests, students and advisers were able to take part in three from over two dozen workshops offered.
Because of the distance and early start of the event, the Mudd Nick Foundation funded an overnight stay at a motel near the campus, along with meals, registration fees and transportation – an all expenses paid field trip at no cost to parents.
Three students made the trip along with second-year Journalism Club adviser and former North Coast Citizen newspaper editor and general manager Dave Fisher.
“It was a fun and educational event, an event certainly worth the time and money,” said Fisher, a graduate of University of Oregon. Mr. Fisher gave students a tour of the campus. “A lot has changed over the years, but a lot remains the same. For me, it was like stepping back in time and it was the first time any of these Neahkahnie students had visited the University of Oregon campus. Thank you Mudd Nick Foundation for making it all possible.”
